More about me...
Growing up in Northern England, I was very lucky to be introduced to the game of squash by my parents at age 4!
I enjoyed a successful junior career which saw me earn 3 caps for England. Upon leaving school, I embarked upon a professional playing career working under the guidance of Malcolm Willstrop and training alongside players such as Lee Beachill and James Willstrop - both of whom went on to become World number 1 ranked players. Being slightly behind these guys in terms of standard and potential, it was necessary for me to subsidise my playing career by providing occasional coaching sessions at my local club.
As I developed a fascination and love for the coaching side of the game (as well as becoming increasingly aware of how tough life was on the playing circuit), I quickly transitioned from a player who did a small amount of coaching to a coach who did a small amount of playing!
I took my first professional coaching role in 2001 at Harrogate Squash and Fitness Centre in North Yorkshire- a club which the (then) England National coach, David Pearson, used to work with the England Senior National Squad Members. This provided an amazing opportunity for me to observe and learn from watching one of the Worlds finest technical coaches at work, whilst also developing my own skills working with players of all standards at club level.
After 4 years at Harrogate, during which I obtained my England Squash Level 3 (Advanced) and Level 4 (Elite) qualifications, I moved on to a similar role at Queens Sports Club in Halifax. During my time there, as well as providing coaching, stringing and racket sales services to club members, I became more involved in working with the English National Squad and also held the role of Regional Coach for the North West of England working with elite junior players and delivering coach development courses in the region. I was contracted by Squash New Zealand to work with a group of their senior national squad members who based themselves in England at that time.
In 2011 I was appointed as High Performance Coach for Squash New Zealand- a major job involving overseeing the running of the National High Performance Programme, coaching national squad players at both junior and senior level, delivery of the National Coaching Conference, coaching and managing teams at World Championships and the pinnacle event of my career- New Zealand Squash Coach at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Although I have now branched out to launch a private coaching business, I am proud to continue to work closely with Squash New Zealand, providing individual coaching and mentoring to many of New Zealand's leading professional players including Joelle King, as well as other professional players and leading delivery of elite junior squad camps.
I feel fortunate to be able to offer a wealth of experience and knowledge to squash enthusiasts of all age and ability, whatever their goals
and aspirations may be.
I hope you find my website interesting and useful, but please feel free to get in touch via phone, email or call into North Shore Squash club for a chat at anytime!
